Spring Gardening at Benedictine Living Community La Crosse

Spring Gardening at Benedictine Living Community La Crosse

At Benedictine Living Community La Crosse, spring doesn’t just show up. It’s something we plan for, talk about and look forward to all winter long. In our assisted living community in La Crosse, gardening isn’t just a seasonal activity. It’s a tradition that brings residents together year after year.

Planning, Planting and Growing Together

It usually starts with a simple list. Residents gather to decide what we want to grow—flowers for color, herbs for the kitchen and of course, tomatoes. Always tomatoes. Everyone has an opinion, and that’s half the fun. These conversations often turn into stories about gardens from years past, what worked well and what we’re excited to try this season.

Once the list is set, someone makes the trip to a local Amish farm to pick everything up. When those plants arrive back at our senior living community in La Crosse, WI, it feels like spring has officially begun.

Planting day is a true group effort. Some dig, some plant, some water and some happily supervise (a very important role).

Moments like these are what make life in an assisted living community so special. The isn’t just to stay active. These are opportunities to be connected, have purpose and share experiences.

A Garden That Brings People Together

As the weeks go by, the garden becomes a natural gathering place. Residents stop to check on progress, offer advice or simply enjoy a sunny afternoon outdoors. It’s a simple activity, but it creates meaningful connection and a strong sense of community.

Every year, there’s one ongoing debate in our garden: Who gets the first tomato?

It’s all in good fun, but it’s taken very seriously. There are daily check-ins as the tomatoes start to ripen and plenty of friendly competition along the way. That first bite is always worth the wait.

At Benedictine Living Community La Crosse, we believe assisted living is about more than care. It’s about living well. Activities like gardening give residents the opportunity to stay engaged, connect with others and enjoy each season to the fullest.

Whether you’ve been gardening for years or just enjoy being part of the experience. garden club is open to anyone who wants to participate.
