Rehabilitation Success Story: Ken’s Journey Back to Eating His Favorite Foods

When looking at successful recovery outcomes, it can be easy to forget that the journey often begins with small milestones leading to a bigger goal. Sometimes, it starts with something small, like a cold glass of water.

When Ken, a 90-year-old resident at Benedictine Living Community-Duluth, came to short-term rehab, swallowing was difficult and unsafe. Meals were limited to pureed foods and drinks needed to be mildly thick.

But Ken had a goal. On his very first day of therapy, Ken shared that the things he missed most: were a cold glass of water and a Chicago-styled hot dog.

A Personalized Therapy Plan That Works

Ken worked closely with speech-language pathologist Kendra using AmpCare ESP™ therapy, a treatment that helps strengthen the muscles used for swallowing. Therapy sessions took place five days a week over the course of three weeks, with a focus on building strength and learning to swallow safely and comfortably.

At first, Ken needed reminders and guidance during therapy. With consistent practice and support, those cues became less necessary. Over time, his swallowing grew stronger and more reliable. By the end of therapy, Ken was able to swallow confidently and independently.

Real Results That Matter

When he was discharged from therapy Ken was ale to return to a regular diet safely enjoy normal foods again. But Ken’s progress wasn’t just clinical; it was personal. He had his eye on a goal he could almost taste.

On his final day of therapy, Ken and Kendra shared a Chicago-style hot dog together. It was a simple moment that marked hard he’d worked and how far he’d come.

Ken’s story is a reminder that progress often starts with something simple. With the right support, those small goals can lead to meaningful change. And sometimes the best measure of success comes topped with mustard, peppers and a shake of celery salt.
