Benedictine Westwood Marks Grand Reopening, Honoring the Legacy of the Benedictine Sisters and a Renewed Vision for the Future

Benedictine Westwood will celebrate its grand reopening Tuesday, July 28, from 3 to 5 p.m., marking a renewed chapter for the campus while honoring more than a century of Benedictine ministry and service in the Duluth community.

The celebration, held at 925 Kenwood Ave., will welcome residents, families and community members to experience the campus’s newly renovated spaces. Guests are invited to tour the community, enjoy refreshments and connect with those who call Benedictine Westwood home.

The story of Benedictine Westwood is rooted in the enduring legacy of the Sisters of St. Scholastica Monastery, whose pioneering spirit helped shape education, health care and social services throughout northern Minnesota. The Sisters arrived in Duluth in 1881 at the request of church leaders to establish schools and care for the community’s growing needs. In the decades that followed, they founded hospitals, schools, a nursing program and numerous ministries that became cornerstones of life across the region. Their work was guided by the Benedictine values of hospitality, stewardship and reverence for every person.

As Duluth grew, so did the Sisters’ ministry. They responded to changing community needs with innovation and compassion, establishing health care services that would ultimately evolve into the Benedictine organization known today.

That same commitment to meeting people where they are continues at Benedictine Westwood, where compassionate, person-centered care remains at the heart of the community. The renovation reflects Benedictine’s continued commitment to providing holistic care in an environment where individuals can live with meaning and purpose. Westwood offers a full continuum of services, including independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, short-term rehabilitation and adult day services.

The Grand Reopening celebration will include drinks, hors d’oeuvres and desserts, as well as opportunities to explore the campus and participate in a gift giveaway.

This milestone represents both renewal and endurance as a celebration of the Benedictine Sisters’ lasting impact on the Duluth community and a continued investment in the future of senior living.
