Mother of Mercy Senior Living to join Benedictine

The respective Boards of Mother of Mercy Senior Living and Benedictine have agreed to transfer membership of Mother of Mercy Senior Living to Benedictine. The effective date of the transfer is dependent on the review and approval by the Minnesota Department of Health and other regulators, but is anticipated that the earliest that it could occur is Dec. 1, 2025.

In addition, the leaders of Mother of Mercy and Benedictine have agreed to have Benedictine manage Mother of Mercy Senior Living, beginning Oct. 1, 2025. This agreement allows Benedictine to begin providing support that may be needed to Mother of Mercy Senior Living prior to the final transfer of membership.

Under the management agreement, Mother of Mercy will have access to Benedictine’s system-wide resources which include a large group of peers for knowledge sharing, the expertise of regional support staff and an extensive library of policies, procedures and information, all designed to enhance resident care.

“Mother of Mercy and Benedictine share a rich Mission, values and history of Benedictine religious serving and guiding the organization, which was important to the Board in choosing Benedictine,” said Mark Knapp, Mother of Mercy board president.

Mother of Mercy Senior Living began under the auspices of Seven Dolors Catholic Parish and was previously managed by the Benedictine Sisters of St. Benedict’s Monastery, St. Joseph, Minn.

Benedictine was established in 1985 by the Benedictine Sisters of St. Scholastica Monastery, Duluth. Similarly, its Mission and Core Values are based in the Rule of Saint Benedict and Benedictine charisms. Benedictine is now nationally recognized as one of the leading Catholic senior living providers in the Midwest.

“We are excited about what this means for the future of Mother of Mercy Senior Living,” said Jerry Carley, Benedictine president/CEO. “We believe that Mother of Mercy Senior Living has a bright future and an important role to play in serving the area into the future. Together, Mother of Mercy Senior Living and Benedictine will be working to continue the Catholic health care ministry that has been serving the Albany area since 1959.”

The two organizations will be working together to make this transition as smooth as possible for all with Benedictine seeking to retain current employees. For now, residents currently living at Mother of Mercy Senior Living and Pondview Estates Independent Senior Apartments will see no immediate changes.
