Benedictine Honors Sister Beverly Horn, OSB, with its Distinguished Leader Award

At the 2023 Anuual Conference in Duluth, Minn., Jerry Carley, Benedictine president/CEO, presented the Benedictine Distinguished Leader Award to Sister Beverly Horn, a member of St. Scholastica Monastery, Duluth, Minn., for her years as a nurse educator and for sharing her knowledge and talents with Benedictine.
The Benedictine Distinguished Leader Award recognizes individuals who through their extraordinary contributions result in a brighter future for aging adults in our nation. The award is given in grateful appreciation and as a permanent testament for distinguished leadership to Benedictine.
Sister Beverly has served as a member of the Benedictine Board Quality Committee since 2008 and as a Benedictine board member for three terms.
Initially beginning her career as an elementary school teacher, she has spent much of her life in nursing and nursing education. She earned her bachelor’s in nursing from St. Louis University, St. Louis, Mo.; and her master’s in nursing and an interdisciplinary Ph. D. (nursing, anthropology and sociology) from the University of Washington, Seattle, Wash. She was faculty member at the College of St. Scholastica, Duluth; at the School of Nursing and Department of Anthropology, University of Washington; and at Wayne State University.
Her focus in teaching and research was in transcultural nursing. She has authored numerous professional journal articles and books, served as a peer reviewer of manuscripts for the Journal of Transcultural Nursing and the Journal of Professional Nursing, and presented at numerous conferences and professional association meetings.
She also co-founded and served as the executive director of the Transcultural Nursing Society for 17 years.
