Susan Adam honored as Benedictine Volunteer of the Year 2023

Benedictine honored Susan Adam, Anoka, as the 2023 Volunteer of the Year at the recent Benedictine Annual Conference in Duluth, Minn.

The Benedictine Volunteer of the Year award recognizes an individual who models the Benedictine Mission and Core Values and has been generous in their service.

In September 2022, Adam came to live at Benedictine Living Community-Anoka, and instantly became the epitome of the Benedictine Mission and Core Values in action. She has her pulse on the community, offering encouragement, support and sometimes song when needed.

When she notices something off with a fellow resident, Adam takes note and will share her observations with staff. With her encouragement, residents who may be reticent at joining in activities, attend and participate.

She also teaches art to other residents during her weekend art classes. When a resident has passed and the honor procession is held, she is there with her soothing voice singing, “On the wings of a dove,” providing comfort to all. All of the residents look to her for friendship, guidance and advice.

“As the campus administrator, it is refreshing and heartwarming, to see one resident take such regard for other residents,” said Tanya Welch, housing administrator for Benedictine Anoka. “Susan does exactly that, on a daily basis. She looks forward to spending her days with her fellow residents and they express joy in having her around. She leads by example and is a true inspiration to residents and staff alike.”
